A Note from Will Haynie

Hello Class of '83 Brothers and supporters,

First, Christmas and holiday best wishes to everyone. It has been a loooong time since those days in 1979 when we knobs had to find a way to put up a Christmas tree in front of our company letters in the Battalions, but here we are. That alone is something to be thankful for – not all of us have this privilege.

In that regard: Our sympathies and prayers to Eddie Collins and his family on the loss of his mother, Susan Collins, on 28 November. Also, to Brian Bonnet on the loss of his brother, Ian Conrad Bonnet, on 25 September.

Citadel News:

The Citadel Women’s Volleyball team won the Southern Conference Championship by defeating Wofford in straight sets on Sunday, 21 November. They lost to the #8 seeded Georgia Tech team in the NCAA tournament in Atlanta on the weekend of 03-05 December. But we all remember BEATING GA TECH in football not that long ago! So, we’re even (not really, revenge is best served cold – Go Dawgs!).

The Citadel’s Annual Giving Day has shifted to 3 May in 2022. Last year, we finished 1st for all alumni classes in the total number of givers with 169. This year our goal is to break the 200 mark for total number of donors on that day. Mark your calendars now. Let’s see which company can come away with the bragging rights for the most donors. As always, support the area that means the most to you, but please consider directing your gift that day toward the Class of 1983 Memorial Assistance Fund as it is the focus of our 40th Reunion Campaign.

Yes – you read that right – it’s not a typo - Our FORTIETH Reunion Campaign.

For reference, at homecoming of our senior year, MG Grimsley, Senator Hollings, LTG Seignious and Governor West, all Class of 1942, were on campus for their 40th Class Reunion.

Pass the Geritol!

The time is now for the Class of 1983 to do yet another great thing for our alma mater. Our class committee has selected The Class of 1983 Memorial Assistance Fund as the focal point of our reunion project. We can all give to other things on campus, and it will count toward our overall reunion goal, but the Assistance Fund is our focal point. It is not a traditional scholarship fund aimed at enticing recruits to enter The Citadel. Instead, and I think in the spirit of men like LTC Harvey Dick and our Honorary Class Member Mark Bebensee, it is designed to help those who fall between the cracks of scholarships and other financial help and are at risk of having to leave The Citadel as upperclassmen due to financial circumstances.

Doesn’t this seem like a very Class of ’83 thing to do – to break the mold and do something different and unique, all with the intention of helping a cadet who only wants what we did – to be a Citadel graduate?

The time to consider making a pledge is now. Why? Because all pledges must be made by the end our reunion year, December 2023, but have until December 2026 to be paid off. The full amount of the pledge counts immediately toward our reunion goals as soon as you make your commitment.

Let’s show them what the Class of ’83 is made of.

I would encourage everyone to consider making their donation through monthly drafts which would allow us to spread out the financial impact PLUS potentially increase everyone’s overall giving capability.

And now is the time to remember The Citadel and the brotherhood of the Class of ’83 in our end-of-year giving.

I thank you very, very much.

In the paths our fathers showed us,

Will Haynie ‘83
